Old Almshouse Meeting and Reading Room
Those inmates with good conduct were permitted to gather quietly in this room, encouraged to read to stimulate the mind to wholesomeness. Many of the books found here had religious overtones, as well as of foreign languages.
As can be seen, the walls were bare slat boards with a fireplace for warmth which was extinguished as were the lights generally at 9:00 pm each evening.
The building has been well vandalized over time and vagrants have chosen to reside here for various purposes on occasion.
