Old Almshouse-Looking In
We now step toward a small separate outbuilding at the almshouse where the inmates were to have meals. Enticing it is not, elegance it lacked, deplorable it was indeed. It was quite strange to see this was the only building on a vast tract of land with other buildings, to bear any type of shade from trees. The outside of the building is constructed with the typical Stucco used frequently in this county, the inside bares one room which at some time probably had two long tables, one for men and one for women. There was to be no talking at a meal, sexes were not to mingle, and seconds were not to be requested. A good example of what occurred in this building would be the scene in the movie "Oliver Twist" when Oliver requests a second helping. How sad it was that mealtime was not an enjoyable part of a long and toiling day for those residing in the poorhouse.
