The Catskill Mountains during the 1920's-1970's, were alive, filled with summer visitors, working hotels, boarding houses, and bungalow colonies available to the summer guests seeking refuge from the hot and steamy streets of New York City.
The area is about 250 square miles, about 90 miles from NYC. Since after the Civil War, the scenery and mountain air has been an attraction to the mountains here in the Catskills. Little at a time, folks from the city looked to settle in the countryside here to escape the unhealthy aspects of tenement living in the city. They bought farms to house their families, which lead to opening their homes to other city folk looking to spend time in the mountains. As a few dollars were made renting rooms, which meant shifting family members to other parts of the premise. As businesses grew, new structures were built and hotels came to be. The rest is history.
Many good times were had as families from the city spent summers in the area, relaxing and enjoying the country air.
